With every new year comes new trends in home interior design. There are a great mix of new sleek and functional cabinet design, as well as some familiar trends pulled from earlier eras (we promise not that avocado green from your mother's kitchen.)
LEARN HOW TO GIVE YOUR KITCHEN AN ANYTHING-BUT-NEUTRAL UPDATE WITH THE MOST VERSATILE COLOR IN THE SPECTRUM.
The design darling of the past several seasons, gray is growing up, as homeowners and designers discover its richer, warmer side. The pale, cool grays we’ve been seeing so much of were a welcome antidote to the standard neutral beige, and felt very crisp and refreshing. But now that gray is officially in our neutral comfort zone, homeowners and designers are experimenting more with with the mid-tones, from stone all the way to charcoal. Designers Andréa Dixon and Jen Ziemer of Fiddlehead Design Group in Minneapolis are on the gray train: “We use a lot of gray. It’s the perfect neutral for a kitchen because it works with any style and mixes with any material,” they told us. Read on to learn their pro tips for using this versatile color in your own workspace.
If your house is lacking storage space and you're just not quite sure what to do, there are plenty of unique ways to utilize cabinets anywhere.
Unless you enjoy constantly changing out your kitchen cabinets to keep up with the latest trends, chances are that you want to keep your kitchen cabinets looking great for many years to come. This requires some degree of maintenance to keep them looking their best. Here are seven maintenance tips for wood cabinets that you should start using today.
Keep Your Kitchen Cabinets Looking Great With These Tips
1. Wipe Kitchen Cabinets Down Regularly
Neglect to wipe your cabinets and it won't be long until they are covered in a sticky, hard-to-remove layer of gunk. Dust and wipe them regularly, and they'll stay looking good as new.
2. Use a Separate Sponge for Dishes and Cabinets
The sponge you use to clean your dishes probably has plenty of grease and food particles stuck in it that you don't want on your kitchen cabinets. Use a separate sponge for each.
3. Test Any Cleaners in an Inconspicuous Location
Not all cleaners work on all types of wood. Refer to the original manufacturer's instructions for an approved product list and be sure to test in an inconspicuous area first.
4. Keep All Food Well-Sealed
Leaving food open in your kitchen cabinets is a great way to invite pests, including ants, mice and termites. Be sure everything is well-sealed at all times to discourage pests.
5. Install a Kitchen Exhaust Vent
Activities like hand washing dishes, cooking and running the dishwasher often produce a significant amount of steam, which can warp and damage the wood cabinets directly above them. Use an exhaust fan to whisk the steam out.
6. Avoid Draping Wet Towels Over Kitchen Cabinets
Draping wet towels over the cabinet doors below your sink can have a similar effect. Hang them on the stove handle or fridge handle instead.
7. Don't Pull on Cabinet Doors
Lastly, don't let your kids pull on the kitchen cabinet doors to climb onto the counters. Not only is this a safety hazard, but it will weaken the door hinges as well.
